Making Weed Cookies at Home with Bud from an Online Marijuana Store
Buying marijuana edibles has always been a sensitive task. They’ve often gotten a bad wrap for being too potent, leaving people feeling much higher than they are comfortable with, while many veteran cannabis users often say store-bought edibles don’t hit them hard enough or offer enough variety. Despite these challenges, consuming cannabis orally is a much-preferred usage, especially for medicinal users who aren’t seeking social or recreational effects.
If you’re a little more particular about your dosing, making your own edibles at home with weed purchased from an online weed store can be a fun way to customize your high. Here’s our guide to how you can make the most out of the bud you purchase by baking some tasty weed cookies with a great flower-like sativa strain, like the Animal Cookies strain.
Decarboxylation
Making weed cookies isn’t as simple as throwing some bud into your batter. Do that, and you’ll end up wasting a lot of weed with barely a buzz. The decarboxylation process gently heats the flower to activate the psychoactive cannabinoid known as THC, which will allow you to create some ultra-potent budder.
To decarb, you’ll want to spread out crumbled or ground cannabis flower on a foil-lined cookie sheet, which will diffuse direct contact and prevent burning your bud. Your oven should be no higher than 225F as too much heat can break down those coveted cannabinoids, so be mindful if you smell any burning. You’ll know your bud is ready for budder when the flower is a lightly toasted golden colour, about 40 minutes.
Understanding Dosing
Once your weed is prepped, you’ll also want to be mindful of the amount of plant you have so that you can translate that to the potency of the budder you’ll make. How potent is the weed you’ve purchased? How many joints would you typically roll yourself out of that quantity? You’ll need to do a little bit of calculating to figure out how that translates to the budder you make. A good safe range is a quarter ounce of flower (3.5g) for every 2 sticks of butter.
Brewing Budder
Decarbed flower also doesn’t get thrown directly into your cookie dough. Instead, you’ll infuse the butter (or preferred fat) with cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes to create psychoactive cannabis budder. Why budder? Because butter is the type of fat used in cookies, you could infuse any oil with cannabis. To do this, melt the required quantity of butter needed for your cookie recipe into a saucepan over low heat, add your flower to it, and simmer on low heat for 45-minutes to an hour. Alternatively, you could simmer in your slow-cooker for 12-18hrs.
After cooking your budder, you’ll want to pour it through a cheesecloth to filter out any plant particles to leave a smooth, multipurpose budder once it cools. If you don’t use all your cannabutter in this batch of cookies, it’ll stay fresh for as long as 2 months in your fridge and 6 months in your freezer.
Choosing a Recipe
You may also want to be mindful of the cookie recipe you use since it can affect your cookies’ potency and flavour. Cannabutter, or budder, contains terpenes and flavinoids, which means it inherits and imparts a strong cannabis flavour to the foods in which it’s used. Cookies with stronger flavours like chocolate, gingerbread, peanut butter, and toffee are rich enough to mask the earthy taste of cannabis, but you can experiment for one that is the more palatable to you.
We already know that high heat will break down cannabinoids, so the lower the baking temperature for your cookie recipe, the more you’ll be able to preserve their potency.
Baking with Budder
Now for the fun part – the actual cookie making. You might be wondering how a weed cookie recipe is different from a regular cookie – it isn’t! The only difference is swapping out regular butter for cannabis-infused butter when it comes to the actual baking. Depending on how the dosing you’d like each cookie to have, you can choose just how much regular butter to substitute with cannabutter. All-budder cookies will provide a long-lasting, in-your-face high. If you prefer more of a chill buzz, use half or two-thirds of budder to regular butter.
You may also think that you absolutely must make your weed-infused cookies from scratch – you don’t! Store-bought cookie mix works just as well and will save time, effort, and cleanup. The Betty Crocker brand alone offers a wide variety of flavours – from apple brown sugar to iconic rainbow chip. Pro-tip: pick up an extra pack of cookie mix for munchies later on!
Things to Consider
Just because you make your edibles yourself doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still exercise some caution. Though you can hope to mix your weed-infused butter evenly through your batter if you’re combing a ratio of butters, it’s always possible that some cookies contain somewhat more or less cannabis. You can also, especially if baking while high, miscalculate dosing per cookie.
To be safe, it’s recommended you start with only one cookie. Since edibles provide a gradually building high, try to be patient with your results, and wait at least an hour before having another cookie to avoid over-doing it. Once you eat it, an edible high will last a long time; slow and steady is the best way to ensure that high is one you’re comfortable with.
